Frequently Asked Questions
How much water should I drink a day?
The general rule of thumb is to drink at least 8 glasses (about 2 liters) of water a day. However, your individual needs vary based on your weight, activity level, climate, and other factors. HydroCalc provides a personalized recommendation.
Does coffee or tea count towards my daily water intake?
Yes, all fluids count towards your daily hydration goal. While caffeinated beverages have a mild diuretic effect, they still contribute to your overall fluid intake.
Why do I need to drink more water when I exercise?
When you exercise, you lose water through sweat. You need to replenish this lost fluid to prevent dehydration, which can impair your physical performance and recovery.
How does climate affect my water needs?
Hot and humid climates increase your body temperature and cause you to sweat more, leading to faster fluid loss. You need to drink more water to compensate for this.
Can I drink too much water?
Yes, it is possible to drink too much water, a condition known as hyponatremia or water intoxication. This occurs when your kidneys cannot excrete the excess water, diluting the sodium in your blood. It is rare but can be dangerous.
What are the signs of dehydration?
Common signs of dehydration include feeling thirsty, dark yellow and strong-smelling pee, feeling dizzy or lightheaded, feeling tired, a dry mouth, lips and eyes, and peeing little, and fewer than 4 times a day.
